The Tampa Rundown
ICYMI – Women's basketball, men's basketball, men's swimming, women's swimming, baseball, softball, men's lacrosse, tennis, women's golf and men's golf were all in action.
Women's basketball had one game this week as they traveled to Daytona Beach to take on the Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University Eagles. The Women would continue their win streak, as they defeated ERAU 64-47. Three different Spartans scored in double figures as LaShayla Wright-Ponder scored 16, Melijah Sullivan scored 12, and Aliyah Abney scored 14 off the bench.
Men's basketball was also at Embry-Riddle to face off against the Eagles. The two teams battled early on the in the game but Embry-Riddle was able to pull out the 77-62 victory. Brent Duncan led the way for Tampa as he scored 27 points and pulled in 10 rebounds.
Men's and women's swimming were in action this weekend as they raced in the Sunshine State Conference Championships. The men's team claimed the conference championship for the first time in program history. Brett Saunders earned the 2020 SSC Swimmer of the Meet. The women also had a strong performance as they finished second in the meet. Courtney Sherwood earned the SSC Swimmer of the Meet.
Baseball was on the road as they traveled to Jefferson City, Tennessee, to face the Carson Newman University Eagles. The Spartans offense exploded in the first game as they scored 14 runs in a 14-3 victory. UT would drop the following game on Saturday 11-7. In the rubber match of the series, the Spartans would battle to claim the 9-5 victory. During the weekend, Dan Sullivan drove in seven runs, while collecting eight hits, and hitting one home run.
Softball went on the road and faced off against the Palm Beach Atlantic University Sailfish. The two teams battled throughout the weekend as they went into extra innings in two of the three games. In game one, UT played its longest game in program history, and they pulled out a 2-0 victory in 17 innings. The second game was won by the Spartans 5-3, and PBA pulled out the victory in the final game, with a score of 7-6, in 10 innings. In the 17 inning classic, Corynn Miner tossed all innings while striking out 17 Sailfish batters.
Men's lacrosse was at home on Saturday as they played against the Young Harris College Mountain Lions. The Spartans used an offensive onslaught as they won by a final of 24-7. Bryan Wright led the way for UT, scoring a career-high five goals and picking up a career-high seven groundballs.
Tennis was on the road in south Florida as they squared off against the top ranked Barry University Buccaneers. The women would fall 4-0 in the match.
Women's golf opened up their 2020 spring season at the World Golf Invitational early last week. The team finished in fourth overall out of 18 teams, as Kiira Riihijarvi would be the top Tampa finisher, as she earned fourth overall.
Men's golf would finish 14th overall at the Spring Kick-Off. Nate Kosarich was the top finisher for UT as he finished 33rd overall.
This Week:
Women's basketball will have two games at home. On Wednesday, they will welcome in the Florida Tech Panthers for a 5:30 p.m. weekday matchup. On Saturday, Barry will come to the Martinez Center for a 2:00 p.m. showdown.
Men's basketball will also be at home for a pair of games, as Wednesday's game against Florida Tech is at 7:30 and Saturday's game against Barry is at 4:00 p.m.
Baseball will open up their conference schedule on Friday, as they host the Florida Southern Moccasins. Friday's game is set to begin at 6:00 p.m., while Saturday's doubleheader will begin at 1:00 p.m.
Softball is also opening up SSC play as they host the Saint Leo University Lions. Friday's game is set to begin at 6:00 p.m. Saturday the teams will play a doubleheader with the first game scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
Beach Volleyball is set to open up the 2020 season on Saturday, as they will travel to Tallahassee to play in the Florida State Tournament. They will play a pair of matches on Saturday as they open with Cal Poly at 2:15 and close the day out against Louisiana Monroe at 6:30 p.m. On Sunday the Spartans wrap up the tournament with games against Houston Baptist at 9:15 a.m. and Florida State at 4:45 p.m.
Men's lacrosse will be on the road as they travel to Lakeland to face Florida Southern. The game is set to begin at 1:00 p.m.
Women's lacrosse will be on the road for a pair of games. On Thursday they will face-off against Newberry College at 4:00 p.m. Then, on Saturday, they will be on the road to square off against Lenoir-Rhyne at 1:00 p.m.
Tennis will be in action on the road on Monday, as they will square off against the fifth-ranked Nova Southeastern University Sharks. On Tuesday, they will be in Orlando to play against Bates. Finally, on Wednesday, they will be back at home, as they are set to meet Florida Southern.
Women's golf will be in action in Lakeland as they will play in the Lady Mocs Classic. Rounds one and two will be on Wednesday, while round three will be on Tuesday.
Men's and Women's track will begin their season at home this Friday as they will be hosting the UT Track Invite. The meet will begin at 6:00 p.m.
