Tampa Wins Series Finale Over Bentley
The Spartans Sweep The Falcons To Start 2016 3-0.
TAMPA, Fla. - The University of Tampa baseball team (3-0) defeated the Bentley University Falcons (0-3) by a final score of 5-0. The Spartans win completed a three game sweep of the Falcons over the weekend.
Brad Hencke started for the Spartans and was dominant against the Falcons. Hencke went four innings, allowing only one hit, giving up zero runs, and throwing two strikeouts. Kevin Martin came on in the fifth inning to relieve Hencke with Tampa leading 2-0.
The duo of Casey Scoggins and Laz Rivera fueled the Tampa offense early on in the game. Scoggins led off the game with a single and thanks to a hit and run was able to get to third off a Kevin Santa single. Rivera hit a sacrifice fly to left field to plate Scoggins and give the Spartans a 1-0 lead after one inning of play.
In the third inning, Scoggins led off with another single and after a stolen base and fielders choice, found himself at third base again. Laz Rivera came up big again for Tampa with an RBI single to left field which brought Scoggins in to score, extending the Spartans lead to 2-0.
Danny Lee contributed to the Spartans offensive production with a two run single in the bottom of the sixth that extended Tampa's lead to 4-0. Kevin Martin was dominant in relief work, striking out six batters and helping keep the shutout alive. Nick Nolan came on in the ninth and secured the Spartans victory with a 1,2,3 inning.
Tampa is back in action Friday, February 5th where they'll square off against the Georgia College Bobcats. Friday's game will be game one of a three game series with the Bobcats and will be played in Milledgeville, Georgia. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 P.M.
