Offensive Onslaught Continues As Spartans Crush Lakers
Tampa pounded out 22 hits in the win.
TAMPA, Fla. – The University of Tampa squared off against Grand Valley State Tuesday night at the UT Baseball Field. The Spartans pounded out 22 hits as they defeated the Lakers 22-7. UT improves to 16-1 on the season, while GVSU drops to 4-4.
Matt Piatt led the Tampa charge offensively for Tampa as he went 3-for-4 with two triples and six RBI. Cody deNoyelles also sparked the Spartan offense, going 2-for-3 with a home run and six RBI.
Tampa jumped on Grand Valley State early as they scored two runs in the bottom of the first. After Kevin Santa reached on an error and Laz Rivera singled, Matt Piatt would drive a ball into left center field, to record a two-run triple to give the Spartans an early 2-0 lead.
GVSU would answer back in the top half of the second inning, as Seth Johnson would hit a homerun over the left field fence.
The Spartans would answer the Lakers run with two more runs in the bottom half of the second, scoring two runs on two throwing errors in the inning.
UT would then extend its lead to 9-2 after scoring two more runs in the third inning and three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Grand Valley State would respond in the top half of the sixth inning, as they scored three runs in the frame. The runs came on three hits capped by a single by Connor Glick, which fell just in front of a diving Danny Lee.
The Tampa offense would then put up a nine spot in the bottom of the sixth inning. UT started its scoring early as deNoyelles would hit a two-run home homer to left field. They would then capitalize on three GVSU errors to add another seven runs in the frame.
In the bottom of the seventh, UT would add another four runs to push their total up to 22.
Conner Andrews earned his second win of the season, as the righty went 1.2 innings, allowing no runs and striking out two batters.
Freshman Mark Moclair would throw the final 2.1 innings for Tampa, allowing no runs, no hits and striking out two batters.
As a staff, the Spartans pitchers recorded 14 strikeouts.
Tampa will back in action on Friday and Saturday as they head to Saint Leo to face the Lions in a three-game SSC Series.
