Blazers Walk Off Against Spartans
Osborne led the offense in the loss.
VALDOSTA, Ga. – The University of Tampa Spartans traveled to Georgia on Wednesday night to face off against the Valdosta State University Blazers. VSU won the meeting between the two teams 7-6 on a walk-off single from Marcus Sigmon. Tampa now falls to 21-4 on the season while Valdosta State improves to 17-12.
Kevin Martin got the start for the Spartans, going 5.0 innings allowing eight hits, five runs, and striking out seven batters. Christopher Williams came in relief as the pitcher of record, pitching 3.1 innings allowing two runs and recording six strikeouts. The loss was Williams' first of the season.
UT was able to jump on top of VSU as they scored four runs in the top half of the first inning. J.D. Osborne delivered a two-RBI double to right field bringing in Casey Scoggins and Danny Lee. He would be followed by Laz Rivera who delivered a two-RBI single plating Kevin Santa and Osborne.
The Blazers would cut into the lead scoring runs in the bottom of the first and second inning.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Valdosta State would gain its first lead of the game as Tyler York hit a three-run home run.
Tampa would tie the game at 5-5 in the seventh inning when Cody deNoyelles singled in Osborne.
The Blazers would respond in the eight scoring a run on a Spartan fielding error.
In the top half of the ninth inning trailing 6-5, Osborne tied the game for UT with a solo home run.
VSU would walk off in the bottom of the ninth when Marcus Sigmon singled with the bases loaded to win the game for the home team.
Osborne finished the game 2-for-4 with three RBI and three runs scored.
