Spartans Win Senior Day Doubleheader to Sweep the Sailfish
Head coach Joe Urso earned his 700th career victory with the series sweep.
TAMPA, Fla. - The University of Tampa baseball team claimed two victories over Palm Beach Atlantic University Saturday afternoon by final scores of 10-1 and 3-0. The two victories completed the sweep for the Spartans and made for a successful 2016 Senior Day.
In Game 1, senior Kevin Martin got the nod for the Spartans and cruised to victory. Martin went seven innings pitched allowing only two hits and one run while striking out two. His effort was enough to claim his fourth victory of the season, putting him at 4-0 on the year.
Tampa struck first in the bottom of the second when Cody deNoyelles hit an RBI single that brought Vin Cosenzo home and put Tampa up 1-0. Cosenzo got an RBI of his own in the third with a solo home run that extended the lead to 2-0.
With a 2-1 score in fifth, Casey Scoggins added some breathing room for the Spartans, blasting a solo home run to right field.
The Spartans offense exploded in the bottom of the sixth inning for four runs. Adrian Chacon and Casey Scoggins each had an RBI of their own. J.D. Osborne crushed a double down the left field line that brought deNoyelles and Miniet in to score, making the score 7-1.
Having a nine-run lead, Jimmy Hodgskin came on in the eighth to wrap things up for Tampa. Hodgskin tossed two innings, only allowing 2 hits while striking out two. His performance was enough to secure the 10-1 victory for Tampa.
In Game 2, Trey Oest got the start for the Spartans. Oest pitched one inning for the Spartans allowing no hits while striking out one and was relieved by Cody Martin to start the second. Martin went five innings pitched, allowing three hits, no runs, and striking out three. Martin's effort was enough to earn him the victory, making him 2-0 on the season.
In the top of the first, Casey Scoggins led off with a triple. This triple marked his 10th of the season and tied the school record for most triples in a single season. Danny Lee was able to bring Scoggins home and gave Tampa an early 1-0 lead.
Vin Cosenzo stayed hot when in the bottom of the fourth he belted a solo home run to right field, extending the Spartans lead to 2-0. Cosenzo now has five home runs in the last five games for Tampa.
Casey Scoggins added some breathing room for the Spartans in the bottom of the sixth when he hit a sacrifice fly that plated Adrian Chacon. The RBI sac fly extended the Tampa lead to 3-0.
Michael Calkins finished off the game on the mound for the Spartans. Calkins went three innings pitched, allowing no runs, no hits, and striking out two. His efforts sealed the Spartans victory and was enough to earn the save.
The 3-0 victory marked head coach Joe Urso's 700th career victory. Urso now sits in the top 25 of all-time wins by NCAA Division II baseball coaches.
Tampa will be back in action Friday, May 6th, where they will square off against the Eckerd College Tritons on the road. First pitch for game one of the three-game series is set to take place at 6:00 PM Friday evening in St. Petersburg.
