MONTEVALLO, AL. – The #1 University of Tampa Spartans take the rubber match behind five home runs.

Final: #1 Tampa 15, Montevallo 4

Records: #1 Tampa (5-1), Montevallo (4-3)

Location: Kermit A. Johnson Field at Bob Riesener | Montevallo, AL. 

All-Time Series: The Spartans are now 3-1 against the Falcons.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • After a one-out single by Cole Russo, Jhoander Irigoyen would lift off, sending a ball over the center field wall. Nico Saladino and Brayden Woodburn would follow with back-to-back walks. Jordan Williams would make a productive out with a sacrifice fly to right field to bring home Saladino. Mid 2 | 3-0 Tampa
  • Irigoyen would reach base safely on an error by the Falcons shortstop. Saladino would follow with his second walk of the day. Woodburn would hit a groundball to the Shortstop, who would make his second error of the inning, bringing in Irigoyen. J. Williams would follow, blasting a pitch over the left-center field wall for a three-run shot and open up the Spartans lead. Mid 4 | 7-0 Tampa
  • With two outs, Irigoyen would draw a walk. The Spartans would then collect three straight base hits. First Saladino, second Woodburn, and then J. Williams would bring in 2 runs with a single to left for his fifth RBI in the last two innings. Mid 5 | 9-0 Tampa
  • After a new arm came in relief for the Falcons, Russo made his presence noticed with a home run to center field. Mid 7 | 10-2 Tampa
  • The Spartans would pour it on Montevallo in the ninth. The Spartans started with three straight walks to open the inning: Mike Valdez, Russo, and Irigoyen. Saladino would hit a fly-ball to left field to bring in A.J. Graham. Woodburn would follow with a 3-run bomb, J. Williams would take in on the action, and the corner out-fielders Woodburn and J. Williams would go back-to-back. Mid 9 | 15-4 Tampa

  • J Williams: 4-5 (2 HR), 7 RBI's, & 2 R's
  • Woodburn: 3-4 (HR), BB, 3 RBI's, & 2 R's

  • Irigoyen: 1-3 (HR), 2 BB's, 2 RBI's, & 4 R's
  • Saladino: 1-2, 2 BB, RBI, & 3 R's

ON THE MOUND:

  • Jake Stipp on the mound. He threw 5 innings while giving up 1 earned run and striking out 6. Stipp received his second win and improved his record to 2-0 on the season.
  • Jacob Fletcher came in relief for Stipp. He threw 2 innings while giving up 1 earned run and striking out 3.
  • Ryan Stefiuk came in relief for Fletcher. He threw a scoreless 8th inning.
  • Logan Wash came in relief for Stefiuk. He threw a scoreless 9th inning while striking out 3.
