TAMPA, Fla. - The University of Tampa Spartans (2-2) played a back and forth overtime battle with the Armstrong State Pirates (2-2), as the Spartans were able to take home the 75-72 victory.
In the first half, the Pirates jumped out to a 13 point lead with 10:24 left on the clock. The Spartans chipped away at the lead, as they were eventually take the lead at 31-30 with 3:52 left. The Spartans built the lead up to five.
In the half, Sophomore Austin Rettig led the way with 11 points for UT.
In the second half, the Pirates were able to build an eight point lead, but again the Spartans were able to chip away and tie it up at 61, with 5:03 left to play. Armstrong State was able to take the lead again from Tampa, but a Rettig three-pointer with 1:32 left in regulation tied the score at 68, and sent the game into overtime.
In the overtime period, UT was able to put up the first points of the period with a pair of Eugene McCrory free throws. With 17 seconds left on the clock, the Pirates inbounded the ball, they were able to move the ball around, but with five seconds left on the clock, the ASU ball handler's foot touched out of bounds, giving Tampa back the ball.
Senior Jordan Davis knocked down both free throws to seal the victory to Tampa.
McCrory led the way for Tampa, as he recorded his third 20 point game of the season. Along with the points, he added 14 rebounds.
Rettig, Matt Johnson, and Davis also scored in double figures, as they added 17, 12, and 10 respectively. Davis was also able to add six assists and nine rebounds.
UT returns to action on Friday as they face Minnesota State-Mankato at 5:30PM in the Eckerd Tournament in St. Petersburg, Fla.
