Spartans Fall Just Short To 17th Ranked Buccaneers
Tampa Holds Barry To Second Lowest Point Total Of The Season
MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – The University of Tampa Spartans took on the 17th ranked Barry University Buccaneers Saturday night. The two teams battled back and forth throughout the night, but eventually BU claimed the 73-67 victory. Tampa now sits at 9-16 and 4-10 in the Sunshine State Conference. Barry is now at 19-5 and 11-4 in the SSC.
Pat Bacon led the charge offensively for Tampa, as the guard scored 22 points and dished out five assists. Duke Shelton added a double-double performance with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Marcel Robinson also added double figures with 10 points.
Barry would be in control of the first half as they led for over 18 minutes. Despite BU leading majority of the half, the two teams played close basketball, as the largest lead was just eight points for the Bucs. With three seconds left to play in the opening half, Bacon sunk a free-throw that would send the game into the half tied at 29.
Austin Rettig would lead the team in first-half scoring with eight points. Shelton was key on the glass, as the sophomore would pull down six rebounds.
The two teams would struggle offensively as UT would shoot just 37.9 percent (11-29) and BU would shoot 34.4 percent (11-32).
The Barry offense would pick up in the second half, as they scored 44 points on 45 percent (18-40) shooting. Barry would race out to a quick nine point lead and never looked back as they secured the 73-67 victory. Down the stretch, the Spartans would pull within five points with under a minute left but could not some shots to fall.
The University of Tampa will be back in action again on Wednesday, February 24 against the Lynn University Fighting Knights. Wednesday will mark senior night for the Spartans.
