Tampa Drops Season Finale To Saint Leo
Jaylen Taylor recorded his first career double-double
ST. LEO, Fla. – The University of Tampa Spartans faced off with the Saint Leo University Lions Saturday afternoon in the Bowman Center. The Spartans battled with the Lions but were unable to pull out the victory, as they fell 74-59. UT concludes its season at 9-18 and 4-12 in SSC play. SLU is now 18-10 and 10-6 in conference play.
Jaylen Taylor led the way for Tampa as the freshman scored 12 points and hauled down 14 rebounds for his first career double-double. Marcel Robinson led the team in points as he scored 16 while Austin Rettig contributed with 13. Matt Johnson also added double figures with 11 points.
In the first half of play, the Spartans were able to jump out to a quick 6-0 lead as Rettig and Robinson connected on three-pointers early on. The Lions would settle down as they were able to head into halftime with a 37-31 advantage.
Taylor led the half for UT with 10 points and eight rebounds.
Tampa would be on the comeback trail in the second half as they were down just five after Johnson connected with a three with 3:48 left to play. However, that was the closest UT would get as SLU ended the game on a 10-0 run to seal the 74-59 victory.
The Lions would outscore the Spartans in the paint 26-20 and 27-2 in bench points.
