Ryan Griffin Named First-Team Academic All-American
TOWSON, Md. - University of Tampa men's soccer standout Ryan Griffin has been named to the 2011 Capital One Academic All-America® NCAA Division II Men's Soccer Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
A three-time all-region selection at midfield, Griffin is a government and world affairs major with a 3.80 G.P.A. The Spartans' leading scorer as a senior, Griffin had 11 goals and three assists en route to first team all-Sunshine State Conference honors. As a junior, he scored seven goals with three assists and had five game-winning goals.
Griffin becomes the first player in UT men's soccer history to be a first-team Academic All-American as Niklas Fredriksson (1993) and Jorgen Adolfsson (1991) are the lone player sin program history to achieve All-American status in the classroom. Both were honored as third-team Academic All-Americans.
He becomes the 26th Spartan to be named to the illustrious Academic All-American program, and the first since volleyball player Margeaux Sinibaldi in 2007. The Brandon, Fla., native is just the eighth player in Tampa history to be honored as a first-team selection.
The Capital One Division II Academic All-America program is being
financially supported by the NCAA Division II national governance
