Florida Southern Hands UT First SSC Setback
Mocs use two first-half goals to set pace.
AUBURNDALE, Fla. - The University of Tampa men's soccer team fell by a 3-1 score against Florida Southern College on Saturday evening.
INSIDE THE MATCHUP:
Final: Florida Southern 3, Tampa 1
Records: Tampa (2-2-1, 1-1-1 SSC), Florida Southern (4-2, 2-1 SSC)
Location: Lake Myrtle Park | Auburndale, Fla.
All-time Series: Tampa leads the all-time series 34-7-4 over the Mocs. This marks four consecutive road matches against the Mocs without a victory for the Spartans.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
1st Half | The match remained scoreless for just over 30 minutes until the Florida Southern's Rene Rivera scored the first goal of the contest on an unassisted score from 30 yards. Just over three minutes later, the Mocs scored another goal on a score from Jacob Ling-Vannerus on a rebound. The Mocs held a 7-5 edge in shots on the half.
2nd Half | Tampa cut the Southern lead in half just over five minutes into the half as Felipe DeSousa netted his first Spartan goal. The score came off a corner from teammate Lewis Sugden. Despite a barrage of shots, the Spartans were unable to capitalize. Florida Southern would eventually seal the victory with a late goal from Georg Michajlov with just under 14-minutes to play in regulation. Each team was credited with eight shots in the final half of play.
INSIDE THE STATS:
• Originally slated to start at 7 p.m., the match started two hours later following a weather delay.
• The Mocs outshot Tampa 15-13 in the match, including an 8-6 advantage in shots on goal.
• Playing in his second game as a Spartan, DeSousa started and netted the team's lone goal.
• DeSousa also turned in a team-leading five shots, including three on goal.
• Juancho Fernandez tallied four shots for Tampa, with two coming on goal.
• Adding a pair of shots for UT was Romario Grant.
• Jake Richards started in goal for the Spartans, finishing with five saves.
• Tampa took five corner kicks while the Mocs had four.
• Fouls were 13-12 in favor of the Moccasins.
