Tampa Drops Upset Bid in Extra Time

TAMPA, Fla. – The University of Tampa men's soccer team's upset bid came up short as No. 11 Lynn University scored on a breakaway in overtime. It was the seventh extra time match for UT this season. 

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:

Final: No. 11 Lynn 3, Tampa 2 (OT)

Records: University of Tampa Spartans (2-7-3, 2-6-0 SSC) vs. No. 11 Lynn University Fighting Knights (9-3-0, 6-2-0 SSC)

Location: Pepin Stadium || Tampa, Fla. 

All-time Series: Lynn leads 24-14-4; The Spartans were unbeaten in the previous four meetings.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

1st Half | In the 31st minute, Marcel Salokat cashed in a penalty kick to give UT the lead. In a chippy first half, 14 fouls were committed between the two teams. Lynn's goal-keeper Roberto Bazzichetto logged one of his two total saves in the first half. 

2nd Half | The Fighting Knights tied things up in the 74th minute as Mark Faeth tallied his third goal of the year. About two minutes later, Lynn took a 2-1 lead on a goal by Jack Watson. In the 79th minute, the Spartans equalized the match as Salokat cleaned up a messy play in front of the net, to notch his second goal on the evening. The graduate student from Paderborn, Germany leads the team with six goals following his first multi-goal performance this season. 

Extra-Time | Less than five minutes into extra time, Jake Richards faced a one-on-one breakaway and as Watson approached, Richards rushed the striker. However, Watson buried the opportunity for his second goal of the match and ultimately the game-winner for No. 11 Lynn. 

INSIDE THE STATS: 

• This was the seventh extra-time match for Tampa this season, and the third loss after regulation.
• Salokat has scored in three consecutive matches for UT. 
• All of Tampa's matches have been decided by one goal or less. 

UP NEXT: The University of Tampa will visit Florida Tech on Saturday evening, kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
