Tampa and Barry Split Friday Doubleheader
Junior Bre Setree and senior Alyssa Bache helped UT take the first game 3-0
Miami Shores, Fla – The University of Tampa visited the Barry University Buccaneers on Friday afternoon. A change of schedule due to inclement weather later on in the weekend forced the double header from Saturday to be moved up to Friday. The two teams split the games, with UT coming out with the victory in the first game and dropping the second game.
Tampa now has an overall record of 12-9 and are 5-6 in Sunshine State Conference play while Barry University is 13-10 overall and 7-4 in SSC play.
Taking the circle for the Spartans for the series opener was senior Alyssa Bache (7-4). Bache continued her impressive streak from last week as once again she pitched the complete game. Despite giving up three hits in the game, the senior did not allow any runs to score. She also had 10 strikeouts to add to her tally while only tossing one walk.
Opposite Bache and starting for the Buccaneers was Geneva Santos (8-5). The pitcher gave up three runs on four hits and walked four batters while only managing to get three strikeouts.
The series opener was scoreless after two innings with both pitchers getting into rhythm early including BU starter Santos getting out of a bases loaded situation without giving up any runs in the first inning. In the third inning, Tampa would score one of their runs as centerfielder Sahrina Cortes scored from second on a RBI single by Bache. In the top of the 5th inning, the offense would come back into play as junior Bre Setree, having walked her first two times at the plate, sent a two out pitch out past the fence in left-center field for her second home run of the season that allowed shortstop Alyssa Colletti to score as well.
In the second game of the day, the roles were switched as the offense for Barry University came out swinging and Tampa was unfortunately unable to match them. The Buccaneers would get on the board early as they got two runs in the first inning and ended up taking the game 8-1.
Freshman Makaleigh Dooley (5-4) was the starter for UT and had a rough night in the circle as she gave up the eight runs with seven being earned on 13 hits and walking three but managing to get five batters to strike out.
Barry University starter Anieliese Palmeiro (5-2) picked up the win as she only gave up the one run to go with four hits while walking three and striking out just a pair of Spartans.
It was a rough finish to the day at the plate for the Spartans as their offense was not able to do much against the Bucs. Freshman Cristina Clauberg scored the single UT run in the third inning off a RBI single up the middle by Dooley.
The Spartans and Buccaneers will wrap up the regular season series with the third game tomorrow morning at 10:00 a.m.
