Stacy Piagno Earns Historic Win with Sonoma Stompers
The Spartan alumni became the third woman since the 1950s to win an American men's professional baseball league game
TAMPA, Fla. - University of Tampa Softball alumni Stacy Piagno clinched a historic win on Saturday on the mound for the Sonoma Stompers as the 26-year-old threw seven innings and struck out four batters, allowing just one run and four hits in her first start (third appearance) of the 2017 season. Piagno (1-0) allowed only one hit after the second inning, retiring the final 11 batters and 16 of the final 17 she faced.
The Stompers overpowered the Pittsburg Diamonds, scoring four runs in the first inning, led 7-1 after three and scored four more in the sixth in the blowout to improve to 27-11.
In doing so, Piagno became just the third woman since the 1950's to win an American men's professional baseball league, joining Ila Borders and Eri Yoshida.
As a Spartan, Piagno appeared in 88 games at second base while tallying 79 hits and 34 runs. The infielder had 54 RBI and 16 drawn walks. The St. Augustine, Fla., native was a two-year letterwinner for the Spartans in 2012 and 2013 after playing her first two collegiate seasons at Flagler College.
