Spartans Reel In Sharks for Game One Victory
The Spartans used a five-run seventh to break the game open and take the series opener
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The University of Tampa softball team traveled south to take on the Nova Southeastern University Sharks in a three-game series. The Friday night opener went in favor of the visitors as Tampa led the entire way, taking a 2-0 lead in the second and adding five in the final inning before conceding one in the bottom half of the inning to take the opening game 7-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Top 2nd: Shelby Press doubled to left field with one away and advanced to third on a single to left field by Taylor Farrell. Emalee Jansen singled through the right side to score the opening run. A single by Erica Matich to right-center field loaded the bases and Cristina Clauberg drew a walk with two outs to drive in one more run.
Top 7th: Sahrina Cortes singled to right field and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Clauberg. Dooley drew a one-out walk to put two runners on. Bailey Phillips then loaded the bases on a fielder's choice as the Sharks attempted to get the out at third but were unsuccessful. Lauren Pascoe replaced Dooley as a pinch runner. Maddie Farrell singled to right field to drive in the first run of the inning and was replaced by Breanna Taphouse as a pinch runner. Press then drove in two runs with a double to left field that kept two runners in scoring position. T.Farrell singled to the shortstop to keep the inning moving and was replaced by Mackenzie Allen as another pinch runner. Jansen added the final two runs of the game for the Spartans with a single to right-center.
Bott. 7th: The Sharks snapped the Tampa bid for a shutout in the bottom half as they scored one run with two outs as the comeback attempt fell short.
INSIDE THE STATS:
- Every Spartan batter reached base at least once during the game.
- Jansen finished the day 3 for 4 with 3 RBI while Press went 2 for 4 with 2 runs and 2 RBI.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
- UT has hit at least one extra-base hit in four straight games.
- The Spartans have recorded at least one run in eight straight games.
- Tampa has drawn at least one walk in eight of the last nine games.

The teams will wrap up their three-game series tomorrow afternoon with a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
