Tampa and Lander Split the Season Opener

Tampa, Fla. – The University of Tampa softball team opened the 2022 season facing off against the Lander University Bearcats in a doubleheader Saturday afternoon.

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:

Game One Final: Tampa 1, Lander 0

Game Two Final: Tampa 1, Lander 3

Records: University of Tampa Spartans 1-1, Lander University Bearcats 1-1

All-time Series: This is the first meeting between Lander and Tampa

HOW IT HAPPENED — GAME ONE:

• The game was scoreless until Mariah Galhouse hit a double down the left-field line then advanced to third on a wild pitch. Alexa Russo then singled, bringing Galhouse home Bottom 6 | 1-0 Tampa 

• The rest of the game continued with no additional runs scored. Top 7 | 1-0 Tampa

INSIDE THE STATS — GAME ONE:

• Corynn Miner pitched all 7 innings for the Spartans and had a total of 7 strikeouts.

• The Spartans had a total of 5 hits and the Bearcats a total of 3. 

HOW IT HAPPENED — GAME TWO:

• The Bearcats were dominating at the plate but their pitcher walked Miner who then advanced to scoring position on a ground out by Russo. 

• Lexie Chevalier doubled down the left-field line, bringing Miner home. Bottom 5 | 1-0 Tampa. 

• With a runner on third, an error by the Spartan infield led to an unearned run by the Bearcats Top 7 | 1-1 Tie

• The Bearcats scored another run off a wild pitch. Top 7 | 2-1 Lander

• Lander scored once more when a runner on third was batted in off a single. Top 7 | 3-1 Lander

INSIDE THE STATS — GAME TWO:

• The Bearcats outhit the Spartans 9-1. 

BEYOND THE BOX:

• This was the first meeting between Tampa and Lander 

• Tampa's pitching had 14 strikeouts on the day.

• Chevalier was a top performer for the Spartans with a double and an RBI in the second game

UP NEXT: Tampa and Ursuline will meet for a Saturday afternoon doubleheader at the Naimoli Family Softball Complex. The doubleheader will begin at 12 p.m and the second game at 2 p.m.
