Spartans Win Big Over Gyrenes
The Spartans battled the Ave Maria University Gyrenes and came out victorious winning with a decisive score of 81-52.
TAMPA, Fla. – The University of Tampa women's basketball team played Ave Maria University and came out victorious, winning 81-52.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
1st Quarter | The Spartans were on the score board first with a two point jumper from senior Jenny Horvatinovic. This was followed by a layup by junior Karma Jeremie, a three point jumper from Horvatinovic, and another layup from Jeremie to make the Spartans go up 9-0 in the first three minutes of the quarter. UT stayed on top and headed into the second quarter leading 24-15. Senior Elena deAlfredo contributed eight points in the opening quarter as well as tallying three assists.
2nd Quarter | Freshman Rachel Warden was the first to score in the second quarter, draining a three point jump shot. Junior Morgan Lumb came off the bench to score a three pointer of her own to increase the lead to 35-21. The Spartans continued on their streak never letting the Gyrenes get too close. UT ended the first half of play leading by a generous 45-31 margin.
3rd Quarter | After the halftime break, Horvatinovic struck again with another three point jump shot followed by a layup. The break only fueled the Spartans as they continued to increase their lead. Back-to-back Warden three pointers would make the score 61-35. The Spartans led by almost 30 as they headed into the final quarter.
4th Quarter | The Gyrenes were on the scoreboard first in the last stanza with a layup. However it wasn't enough to spark their offense. The Spartans continued to tally point after point, increasing their lead by as much as 30. A three pointer by Lumb would solidify the win at 81-52.
INSIDE THE STATS:
- Junior Faith Sanders and senior deAlfredo led all Spartans with 15 points each.
- The Spartans shot 52.8 percent from the field while the Gyrenes shot 38 percent.
- The Spartans bench contributed 29 points.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
- Six Spartans scored in double figures.
