Kiira Riihijarvi Earns Invite to NCAA Super Regional
Becomes first golfer in program history to receive selection.
INDIANAPOLIS —The NCAA Division II Women's Golf Committee has selected the teams and individuals that will compete in the 2017 NCAA Division II Women's Golf Championships. University of Tampa freshman Kiira Riihijarvi was the top individual selection for the South Super Regional.
The NCAA Division II Women's Golf Super Regional competition will be conducted on May 8-10. Each super regional will consist of both team and individual competition, conducted concurrently with 12 teams and 6 individuals from non-qualifying teams at each site. All participants will compete through the 54 holes of competition. The top three teams along with the top three individuals not with a team from each super regional will advance to the championships.
Riihijarvi, a freshman from Oulu, Finland, is the first student-athlete in UT women's golf history to earn an invite to the NCAA tournament. She achieved the feat in the program's sixth full season of competition.
She is shooting 76.81 in 16 rounds throughout her freshman campaign. Riihijarvi has twice finished in the top-10, with her top finish coming at the Flagler Fall Slam where she was sixth overall. She also finished seventh at the Florida Tech Lady Panther Invitational.
Finishing first among Spartans in five tournaments this season, her scoring average ranks as the best in program history by over three strokes.
The 2017 NCAA Division II Women's Golf Championships will be held May 17-20 at Findlay Country Club in Findlay, Ohio. The number of participants that qualify for the finals is 72.
