Pensacola, Fla. - The eighth-ranked University of Tampa handed 12th-ranked West Florida a 2-0 loss as the Spartans clearly defined themselves as the South Region's top team. The victory over the second-ranked team in the region improves Tampa to 9-1 on the season as UT has now won six consecutive matches.
Following a scoreless first half where Tampa outshot West Florida 6-3, the Spartan leading scorer Shelby Kuni put UT on the board at the 50:58 mark off a pass from freshman Jocelyn Charette. Tampa stretched the lead to 2-0 as Charette added an unassisted goal at 63:03 on a shot from the outside box that went over the head of the UWF goalkeeper.
Tampa goalie Shannon Aitken recorded her third shutout of the season as the junior from Land O'Lakes won her ninth game. In 90 minutes of play, Aitken was credited with four saves as the Spartans outshot the Argonauts 14-7.
The Spartans return home to host Nova Southeastern on Wednesday, October 4 at 7:00 pm. The match will mark a string of three consecutive home games for Tampa.
