SAVANNAH, Ga. - In its third consecutive match against a nationally ranked opponent, The University of Tampa (3-5-1) women's soccer team ended up on the wrong side of a 4-2 decision with No. 19 Armstrong Atlantic State University (6-1-2).
The Spartans started with a bang, scoring the first two goals to take a quick 2-0 lead. Both UT goals came in the first five minutes as sophomore Brittan Spence began the scoring with a goal at the 1:35 mark. Freshman Maddie Dugan assisted on the first Spartan goal.
Tampa responded with a Samatha Kay goal in the fifth minute as Renata Figueira was credited with the assist. At 30:07, AASU scored its first goal and promptly tied the contest at 2-2 just two minutes later.
The Pirates then took a 3-2 lead to the half as Kristin Burton scored with just three seconds remaining until intermission. Armstrong added a second-half goal in the 71st minute to extend its lead to 4-2. Burton finished with a goal and two assists to lead AASU.
The Spartans finished with 13 shots as the teams were knotted with eight shots on goal apiece. Spence and freshman Courtney Peffley each had two shots on goal as Kay finished with a team-high three shots.
Senior Saige Steinmetz started in goal for Tampa, notching four saves in 90 minutes of play.
Tampa returns to action on Sunday in Savannah as it will face Georgia College and State University in a neutral site meeting. Game time is 1 p.m.
