Spartans Shoot Past Lions in SSC Contest
ST. LEO, Fla. - The University of Tampa (6-2, 2-0 SSC) women's soccer team came away with a 1-0 shutout of host Saint Leo University (2-5, 1-2 SSC) in a meeting between Sunshine State Conference opponents.
The Spartans controlled the match from start to finish, coming away with a decisive advantage in both shots (19-4) and shots on goal (4-2). Tampa also had eight corner kicks, compared to three for the Lions.
It took just over 89 minutes for UT to net the game-winner, as freshman Cici Gonzalez beat the final buzzer and connected on her eighth goal of the season on a thru ball from teammate Amber Pennybaker. Lauren Moore successfully played the ball to Pennybaker on the lone goal.
Gonzalez, Moore and Gabby Russo each tallied four shots on the evening for the Spartans, with eight UT players garnering at least one shot.
Kori Butterfield recorded her second consecutive SSC shutout as the sophomore goalkeeper came away with two saves.
Tampa will return home to Pepin Stadium as it will play host to Barry University on Saturday at 5 p.m., in a non-conference affair between the two SSC institutions. Live stats and a webcast will be available through TampaSpartans.tv.
