Spartans’ Big Three Rock Buccaneers
TAMPA, Fla. - The University of Tampa (7-2) women's soccer team defeated Barry University (3-3) on Saturday evening by a score of 3-1 at Pepin Stadium.
"The team was very impressive tonight against a strong Barry University squad," says head coach Gerry Lucey. "Our attitude and mentality were good which helped us to an impressive second half. We have been very unlucky this year hitting the woodwork and that proved true again in the first half. We began the second half stronger and exerted ourselves. Barry has been one of the strongest opponent we have faced this year and delighted that we have the win. All credit to the team in putting out chances away. We scored three very nice goals through Lauren, Gabby and Cici."
The first half of the match was tightly contested, as there was no score between the teams going into the half.
"Our defense has been strong the past few games and allowed us to play fun attacking soccer," states Lucey.
The Spartans stormed onto the field in the second half, as the Big Three of Cici Gonzalez, Lauren Moore and Gabby Russo each registered a goal.
Moore, a Tampa, Fla. native, is the first of the Spartans to get to ten goals this season.
Courtney Peffley, Cina Salemi, and Candice Shields were credited with assists in each of the goals scored.
"Hopefully we will continue to improve over the coming games and hit our stride," concludes Lucey.
UT will be back in action on the road on Sep. 26 against Lynn University at 1 p.m., with live stats available through Lynn's athletic site.
