Fast Start Puts No. 22 Tampa Back on Track
MIAMI SHORES, Fla. - The No. 22 University of Tampa (9-3, 4-1 SSC) women's soccer team picked up a Sunshine State Conference road victory with a 2-1 win over Barry University (3-5, 1-3 SSC).
Leading scorer Lauren Moore needed just four minutes to get Tampa on the board first as the sophomore scored her 11th goal of the year on a penalty kick. Freshman Cici Gonzalez connected on a rebound of her own shot to make it 2-0 UT in the 19th minute.
After outshooting the Buccaneers 11-4 in the first half, UT surrendered a late goal by Barry as Kayla Hodge scored from the middle of the box in the 61st minute.
The Spartans would hold on for the victory, outshooting the Bucs 24-6 on the game, including a 12-2 advantage in shots on goal. Moore and Gonzalez were both credited with five shots as Gabby Russo had three.
Kori Butterfield picked up the win as the sophomore goalkeeper had one save.
After suffering its first SSC loss on Saturday to Rollins, Tampa remains at the top of the SSC standings with three league matches to play.
Tampa will return home to host Florida Tech on Saturday at 5:30 p.m., in an SSC contest. The teams previously met on Sept. 12 with the Panthers holding on to a 1-0 victory in Melbourne. Live stats and a webcast will be available through TampaSpartans.tv.
