Spartans Meet SSC Foe Florida Southern in Pair of Swimming Events

LAKELAND, Fla. – The University of Tampa men's and women's swimming teams headed up I-4 on Friday as they traveled to take on Sunshine State Conference opponent Florida Southern College.

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:

Men's Final (Meet One): Florida Southern Mocs 101, Tampa Spartans 29

Men's Final (Meet Two): Florida Southern Mocs 101, Tampa Spartans 28

Women's Final (Meet One): Tampa Spartans 71, Florida Southern Mocs 58

Women's Final (Meet Two): Tampa Spartans 77, Florida Southern Mocs 53

Location: Hollis Wellness Center Pool | Lakeland, Fla.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Both meets totaled 14 events, including seven for the men and seven for the women.
  • Tampa's women won four out of seven of their events in each of the meets. 

TOP PERFORMERS (MEN):

MEET ONE:

  • Hugo Bustamante, Youssef Khowessah, Noah Paut, and Mikael Haugen placed second in the 200 Yard Medley relay with a time of 1:33.37.
  • In the 1,000 Yard Freestyle, Ian Morgan registered a time of 9:52.40 to finish third.
  • With a time of 1:45.16, Yannick Smith placed third in the 200 Yard Freestyle.
  • Khowessah was the runner up in the 100 Yard Breaststroke earning a time of 58.74
  • Placing third with a time of 1:58.31 was Thomas Clark in the 200 Yard Butterfly.
  • Paut took second in the 50 Yard Freestyle with a time of 21.28.

MEET TWO

  • In the 100 Yard Freestyle, Smith was the runner-up with a time of 46.33.
  • C.J. Hills took third in the 200 Yard Backstroke with a time of 1:59.35.
  • With a time of 2:10.20, Khowessah placed third in the 200 Yard Breaststroke.
  • In the 500 Yard Freestyle, Morgan finished third at 4:45.06.
  • Grant Ruster took third in the 200 Yard IM with a time of 2:01.93.
  • The 200 Yard Freestyle relay (Haugen, Brian Daugherty, Smith, Marvin Slanschek) finished second with a time of 1:24.43.

TOP PERFORMERS (WOMEN):

MEET ONE

  • Roma Vrijhof, Alli McFarland, Katie Horan, and Kristen Wagner made up the 200 medley relay which placed second with a time of 1:49.02.
  • The Spartans swept in the 1,000 Yard Freestyle. Alexa Turco finished first with a time of 10:50.63. Megan Arnold was the runner up with a time of 10:59.98. Sara-Kellett Clark was third with a time of 11:01.64.
  • Lindsey Grater led the Spartans to a second sweep, winning the 200 Yard Freestyle with a time of 1:54.61. Maureen Moore took second place with a time of 1:58.41. Isabella Haight finished third at 1:59.18.
  • In the 100 Yard Backstroke, Vrijhof placed second earning a time of 1:00.69.
  • McFarland won the 100 Yard Breaststroke with a time of 1:06.84.
  • In the 200 Yard Butterfly, Horan won with a time of 2:07.67. Carlee Sanchez-Hegarty took third with a time of 2:15.21.
  • Wagner placed second in the 50 Yard Freestyle with a time of 25.09.

MEET TWO

  • To lead off the second meet, Moore placed second in the 100 Yard Freestyle with a time of 53.97.
  • Erin Hixenbaugh was the runner up in the 200 Yard Backstroke with a time of 2:09.82. Karolyn Merch took third with a time of 2:11.17.
  • In the 200 Yard Breast, McFarland led the pack ending with a time of 2:29.08. Jessica Blanchard placed third with a time of 2:31.06.
  • Turco, Haight, and Arnold once again dominated the distance event in the meet sweeping the 500 Yard Freestyle. They finished at 5:18.40, 5:22.54, and 5:24.16, respectively.
  • Horan won the 100 Yard Butterfly with a time of 58.06. Grater took third with a time of 58.24.
  • Merch was the runner-up in the 200 Yard IM, finishing with a time of 2:12.30. Hixenbaugh came in third ending with a time of 2:15.30.
  • Vrijhof, Wagner, Grater, and Haight comprised the 200 Yard Freestyle Relay and ended the meet with a first-place finish with a time of 1:38.65.

UP NEXT:
