Sorrel Houghton Earns Sunshine State Conference Offensive Player of the Week
Freshman Sorrel Houghton earns her first ever player of the week honor after logging 49 kills for Tampa this past week.
MELBOURNE, Fla. – After leading the Spartan offense to a 3-0 week, University of Tampa volleyball freshman outside hitter Sorrel Houghton was tabbed Sunshine State Conference Offensive Player of the Week for the period spanning Oct. 16-22, as announced by the conference office on Monday. This marks the first player of the week honor for any Spartan this season.
The 6'0 freshman posted 49 kills across three matches, averaging 4.08 per set. In UT's match against the Eckerd Tritons, Houghton had 12 kills at a .108 kill percentage. Additionally, in the match, she contributed on two blocks for the Spartans. Houghton then led the Spartans on offense in both of their games this past weekend against Nova Southeastern and Barry respectively. In the sweep of the Nova Southeastern Sharks, she posted 16 kills at a whopping .353 kill percentage. Then against the Barry Buccaneers, she logged a career-high of 21 kills at a .273 hitting percentage.
The Osteen, Fla. native has played in every match this season by UT. Houghton found her comfort on the court in the game against the Embry-Riddle Eagles on October 6, where she stated more than 10 kills for the first time, ending the match with 18 at an outstanding .293 kill percentage. She then continued to act as one of Tampa's most distinct offensive threats when the team traveled to Florida Tech and then on to Hoover, Alabama for the South Region Crossover. In Alabama, UT went a perfect 3-0, only dropping one set to Shorter. Houghton's numbers in Alabama read 15, 15, and nine kills respectively.
The Spartans currently sit at 11-10 and are 6-4 in SSC matchups this season.
UT will look to another strong week of offense, as the team travels Saint Leo for a Tuesday night matchup, slated for a 7 p.m., followed by a trip to south Florida to take on the Lynn Fighting Knights. Live stats as well as a live video webcast will be made available through www.tampaspartans.com.
