The Tampa Rundown
ICYMI – In case you missed it, women's basketball, men's basketball, men's golf, beach volleyball, softball, baseball, women's lacrosse, men's lacrosse, track, and tennis were all in action this past week.
Women's basketball suffered their first SSC loss of the season on Wednesday night as they fell to the Florida Southern Moccasins 56-51 at home. The Spartans would bounce back from the defeat as they traveled down to Lynn and defeated the Fighting Knights 66-46.
Men's basketball wrapped their 2019-2020 season up this past week as they faced Florida Southern and Lynn. In the game against #5 Florida Southern, Tampa nearly pulled off the upset as they fell 90-89. They would drop their final game of the season against Lynn as they fell 114-80.
Men's Golf participated in the Saint Leo Invitational early last week. As a team, the Spartans would finish in eighth place overall.
Beach volleyball traveled down to Miami as they would participate in the FIU Beach Bash hosted by Florida International University. The sandy Spartans would finish the weekend 3-1 as they defeated Webber International, Missouri State, and San Diego City College. Their lone loss came to #14 Florida International.
Softball was at home for five this past week. On Monday Tampa hosted a doubleheader against Davenport winning both games by finals of 3-0 and 11-5. Over the weekend the Spartans welcome in Eckerd College for an SSC series. UT would sweep the series over the Tritons as they took all three games by final scores of 2-0, 5-0, and 4-1.
Baseball had four games last week, as they were on the road for a mid-week game and then hosted a three-game homestand. On Tuesday, baseball traveled to St. Petersburg as they faced off against the Eckerd Tritons. The Spartans came from behind in the ninth inning as they claimed a 10-8. In the home SSC series, Florida Tech came into Tampa as the Spartans came out on top winning two of three games. Tampa won the first game in a pitcher's duel as they came out on top 1-0. UT would win game two 5-2 and would drop the series finale 3-2.
Women's lacrosse had one game this week as they faced off against the fifth-ranked team in the nation, the Lindenwood University Lions. LU would use a balanced team performance to claim an 11-5 victory.
Men's lacrosse hosted one game this week as North Greenville traveled into Tampa. The first half was close at Tampa held a 4-3 lead after the first 30 minutes. Tampa would explode offensively in the second half as they ran away with a 16-6 victory.
Men's and women's track were at home on Friday as they hosted the annual UT Track Classic. The men's team would finish second overall, while the women finished third overall. Overall four Spartan records were broken in the races including two 5k records. Trevor Kattenberg set the school 5k record with a 14:37.82, while Zoe Jarvis broke the women's record with a time of 17:07.39.
Tennis had a pair of games away from home as they played against Valdosta State and Georgia College. In the game against Valdosta, Tampa came out victorious with a 4-3 victory. Against Georgia College, UT ran away with a 7-0 victory.
THIS WEEK
Women's basketball is back at home as they are the top seed in the Sunshine State Conference tournament. UT opens up against Embry-Riddle Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. Should the Spartans advance, the semifinals are on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. and the finals are Sunday at 1:00 P.M.
Men's golf is in Melbourne Florida as they are participating at the Panther Invitational. Round one was yesterday, round two is today and the third and final round will take place tomorrow.
Baseball plays at home today at 3:00 p.m. against Seton Hill. Over the weekend they will hit the road as they face off against Albany State for a three-game series. They will play on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
Softball is in action on Tuesday as they host a doubleheader against Wilmington. Over the weekend they will travel to Lakeland as they face Florida Southern for a three-game series.
Women's lacrosse will have a pair of games this week as they host Concordia-St. Paul at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday and then play North Greenville on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
Men's Lacrosse will be on the road this week as they travel up to Baltimore, Maryland to face Adelphi in a neutral site game. The game is set to begin at noon and is being held at Johns Hopkins University. On Saturday they will return home for a noon game against Saint Rose.
Tennis returns home this week as they welcome in Saginaw Valley on Thursday. The match is set to begin at 3:00 p.m.
Beach Volleyball will be back in action on Friday and Saturday as they will be in St. Petersburg for the Eckerd College Battle on the Bay. In the tournament, the Spartans will play Palm Beach Atlantic, Eckerd, Florida Atlantic and Florida Gulf Coast.
Rowing will have their first race of the spring as they will be racing in the USF Regatta on Saturday.
