Spartans Headed to the SSC Semifinals
MELBOURNE, Fla.- The University of Tampa men's basketball team will travel to Florida Tech for the semifinals of the Sunshine State Conference. The Spartans will face the Rollins Tars in a 7:30 p.m. Saturday contest at the Clemente Center, home of FIT and host of the BlueCross BlueShield of Florida SSC Tournament.
Tampa leads the all time series against Rollins 66-40. The Spartans split the regular season match up, defeating Rollins on January 2 by a score of 86-80, and losing 65-78 on February 2. UT defeated Florida Tech on Wednesday evening to advance to the semis.
The Spartans ended the regular season with a 10-6 SSC record landing the fourth spot in the league, while Rollins tops the conference with a 13-3 SSC record.
The last time UT met Rollins in the SSC tournament was in 2002 where the Spartans defeated the Tars 84-63. The Spartans are 7-2 against the Tars in SSC tournament play.
Led by SSC Coach of the Year Tom Klusman, the Tars have three players averaging double figures. SSC Player of the Year Nick Wolf leads the club averaging a double- double of 20 points per game and 10 rebounds per game. Matt Robertson and Myk Brown follow with 14 and 13 points per game respectively.
Coach Richard Schmidt's Spartans currently have three players averaging double figures. All-SSC team honoree Rashad Callaway leads his squad with 19 points per game and a total of 57 steals on the season. Fellow SSC honoree Anthony Griffis chips in 15 points per game followed by the team's double-double leader Fred Woods who contributes 12 points per game.
The winner of this anticipated semi-final match up will advance to the SSC tournament final hosted by Florida Tech on Sunday. The winner will face the victor of the Florida Southern vs. Eckerd contest. The winner of the conference tourney will advance to the regional where the host site will be determined after final results are posted following individual conference tournament play.
