Spartans Win Duel With Knights
BOCA RATON, Fla. - The University of Tampa headed down to Boca Raton for a mid-week battle with the Lynn University Fighting Knights. The Spartans pulled out a 66-61 victory.
The victory propels Tampa to 12-8 overall, and 5-5 in conference play. Lynn falls to 14-5, and 7-3 in SSC play. The victory gives the Spartans a series sweep with the Fighting Knights.
Freshmen Othniel Shelton led the way for Tampa with 17 points and six rebounds. Senior Jordan Davis contributed with 15 points, six assists, and four rebounds.
Sophomore Austin Rettig and Senior Eugene McCrory added double figure with 14 and 11 points respectively.
The first has was a tightly contested game, as the Fighting Knights took a 34-29 lead into half time. Both teams were fairly even in field goal percentage as Tampa shot 40% (10-25) from the field, and Lynn shot 44% (11-25).
Tampa's defense stepped up in the second half, as they held Lynn to 10-31 (32.3%) from the field.Tampa also found rhythm on offense as they finished 10-18 (55.6%) from the field.
Davis put the nail in the coffin with 13.3 seconds left in the game, as he stole a Lynn pass and took it coast-to-coast for a lay-up as he was fouled. The ensuing free-throw was good to seal the 66-61 victory.
UT will be back at home Saturday, as they square off against the Florida Tech Panthers at the Bob Martinez Athletics Center. The game is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
