Spartans Open Season With Impressive Showing
Tampa hangs with defending national champs in season opener.
DADE CITY, Fla. - The University of Tampa men's golf team went head to head with several NCAA Division II powers at the Saint Leo Invitational, finishing ninth overall in the three-round event.
The 2016-17 opener included a pair of rounds on Monday followed by the third and final round on Tuesday. Tampa completed the tournament just four shots behind host and defending national champion Saint Leo.
UT registered rounds of 298, 294 and 300, totaling an 892 (+28). Fellow Sunshine State Conference opponent Florida Southern won the team title, shooting an 852 (-12). Florida Tech (873) and Eckerd (911) also represented the SSC at the opening tounament.
Senior Danny Syring was the top performer for Tampa, shooting a 218 (+2) to finish 19th overall. Syring's top round was a team-best 71 in the second round. Rounding out the Spartan lineup were Gray Barnes (220), Jacques Celestino (227), Myles Wharram (232) and Eddie Doyle (236).
Competing as individuals for head coach Rick Christie were Justin Elwell (237), Jonathan Bulle (242) and Robert Montagnino (247).
Tampa is back in action on October 2-4 at the University of South Carolina-Beaufort Invitational in Palm Harbor, Fla. The tourney will be played at Innisbrook Golf Course.
