Tampa Opens the 2016 Season with a Victory
Under overcast and rainy weather, UT wins 4-2 against West Florida
TAMPA, Fla - The University of Tampa Men's soccer team started their 2016 campaign one day later than scheduled after rain moved their home and season opener against West Florida from Thursday night to Friday afternoon. The Spartans and Argonauts played out their game under an overcast and rainy sky and it was Tampa who won the game, coming out victorious 4-2.
"In this region, we are extremely happy to earn a win," says head coach Adrian Bush. "We can now focus on our game on Sunday."
UT took control of the first half as they outshot UWF 11-4 and had the better chances as the scoreboard reflected it, with the team taking a 2-1 lead into the break as Fredinho Mompremier was assisted by Chris Dusabe and Lewis Sugden for his first goal of the year and Ramzi Toure scored his first goal of the season while Gavin Gillies scored for the visitors for his first tally.
In the second half, it was again the Spartans who kept going with the momentum as they scored two goals in the span of five mins to take a commanding 4-1 lead against the Argos. Mompremier scored his second goal of the season in the 51 minute and Jason Collister followed up with his first goal of the season three minutes later in the 54th minute of play, assisted by Bay Downing and Mompremier. In the 63rd min of action, West Florida found the back of the net again as Daniel Smith combined with Allan Kuhne to cut the deficit to 4-2.
Overall, Tampa outshot West Florida 17-6 in shots and 9-5 in shots on goal. The home side had the advantage in corners as they had four to one for the visitors.
The team will be back in action this Sunday, September 4 as they host Spring Hill College for their second game of the season. Kickoff is scheduled for 11 a.m. at Pepin Stadium.
