Bay Downing Makes Spartan History as UT Routs Auburn-Montgomery
The Spartan junior netted a school-record five goals in the victory.
TAMPA, Fla. - Bay Downing set a new single-game scoring record as the No. 23 ranked University of Tampa men's soccer team won its second match in as many days with a 6-1 win over Auburn University in Montgomery.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
1st Half | It was an exciting first half for the Spartans as they took on the Auburn-Montgomery Warhawks. UT came ready to play with a goal from Downing just 5 minutes after kick off. He was assisted by Jake Winship. Not even 7 minutes later, Fredinho Mompremier increased the Spartan's lead, off of a pass from Zack Soufl. As the rain picked up, the Spartans did not slow down their attack. With a pass from Mompremier, Downing was able to score his second goal of the game for the Spartans. However, Downing was not finished as he completed his hattrick with a goal less than a minute and a half later. With only a minute left in the half, Downing heads the ball into the back of the net for his 4th goal of the game. He was assisted off a corner kick from Michael Dooley. An impressive first half came to a close with the Spartans ahead of the Warhawks 5-0.
2nd Half | The second half did not include as much action as the first, but Downing was able to make the UT record books with his fifth goal of the match. The junior scored in the 79th minute, with the assist coming from Chris Dusabe. Auburn-Montgomery would score its lone goal in the 84th minute to break up the shutout.
INSIDE THE STATS:
• The teams had an identical 12 shots apiece, with Tampa registering a 7-5 edge in shots on target.
• Downing was the only Spartan with multiple shots, as the junior tallied seven. Five of his shots were on goal.
• Jake Richards earned the start in goal and played just over 36 minutes to earn the win. The freshman keeper finished with one save.
• Richard Trench entered in goal in the 36th minute and played the remainder of the match. Trench faced four shots, finishing with three saves.
• A total of 23 players saw action for Tampa.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
• Downing set a new UT record with 5 goals in a single game.
• The previous record of four goals in a game was held by nine players, with the last coming from Ricardo Cardoso in 2006. Current head coach Adrian Bush twice scored two goals in a match.
• Richards started his 10th match of the season, as the freshman has now started four consecutive contests.
• After defeating No. 8 Barry on Friday by a 4-1 score, the Spartans outscored their opponents 10-2 in back-to-back matches.
• Downing more than doubled his goal total for the season, going from two to seven on the year. He is now tied for second on the team in goals with Jason Collister and Sugden.
• Mompremier has now scored 11 goals on the season. The sophomore scored twice against Barry and has now scored in eight of UT's 11 games.
