UT Sweeps SSC Player of the Week Awards
After a sweep of No.4 Saint Leo, Pillers and Dooley were recognized by the conference
MELBOURNE, Fla.- Elly Pillers and Makaleigh Dooley were awarded SSC Softball Player of the Week and Pitcher of the Week respectively as announced by the conference office today. The duo helped Tampa to a midweek sweep of the 4th ranked Saint Leo University Lions in Saint Leo, Fla.
Pillers earned the first player of the week for UT in softball as she hit a pair of solo home runs in the first game against SLU in a 2-1 win against Saint Leo's starting pitcher Stephanie Adkins who had not given up more than one home run in a game all season. In the series, the junior right fielder scored five runs and drew five walks. This season, she has a .358 AVG and has scored a team-leading 19 runs.
Dooley earns her fourth Pitcher of the Week award after going 2-0 in three appearances against the Lions. In her two wins, the sophomore pitcher held the home side to seven runs (five earned) across 12 innings of work. For the season, Dooley has a 1.76 ERA and has a 16-5 record.
The Spartans will be back on the field this weekend as they will visit the Eckerd College Tritons for the final road series of the regular season. The opener is scheduled for Friday at 6 p.m. and the series will conclude with a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.
Sunshine State Conference Athletes of the Week are chosen from a pool of nominees for their performances during the week of April 10-16, 2017. Athletes are nominated by Sports Information Directors of member institutions.
