Tampa Splits Season Finale Doubleheader With Mocs
UT honored its four seniors between games.
TAMPA, Fla. – The University of Tampa softball team played to a doublheader split with Sunshine State Conference rival Florida Southern College to conclude the 2017 regular season.
INSIDE THE MATCHUP:
Game One Final: Florida Southern 9, Tampa 6
Game Two Final: Tampa 2, Florida Southern 0

HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME ONE):
Top 2nd: Florida Southern wasted little time on the offensive side, plating three runs in the top of the second inning to grab the early lead.
Top 4th: Tampa found itself in a 5-0 hole as the Mocs scored a pair of runs.
Bottom 4th: The Spartans got on the board when Taylor Farrell singled home Shelby Press to cut the deficit to 5-1.
Top 5th: Florida Southern would answer with two of its own, extending the advantage to 7-1.
Bottom 5th: Tampa scored three runs, cutting the FSC lead to 7-4. Corynn Miner doubled home Makaleigh Dooley. That was followed up by a two-run double by Press that crossed Miner and Sittloh.
Bottom 6th: Freshman Maddie Farrell cut the deficit to 7-6 as she connected on a two-run single that scored Dooley and pinch-runner Brooke Stiles.
Top 7th: The Mocs tacked on a pair of runs, giving themself added cushin and pushing the edge to 9-6, which was the eventual final score.
INSIDE THE STATS (GAME ONE):
- Dooley went 3-for-3 in game one, scoring a pair of runs while also drawing a walk.
- Adding a pair of hits apiece in the first game were Elly Pillers, M. Farrell and Miner.
- M. Farrell and Press each drove in a pair of runs in game one.
- Miner started in the circle and took the loss to drop to 12-5 on her freshman campaign. She threw 2.0 innings, allowing five hits and three runs.
- Dooley entered in relief and tossed 5.0 innings. She yielded seven hits as four of her six runs were earned.
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME TWO):
Bottom 1st: Senior Bre Setree slugged her sixth career home run as launched a shot that cleared the centerfield fence. The blast also scored Press to give the Spartans the 2-0 early advantage.
INSIDE THE STATS (GAME ONE):
- Setree finished 2-for-3 with a single and the big blast, which accounted for both Spartan runs.
- Miner earned the complete game shutout to improve to 13-5 on the year. She allowed just three hits while fanning a pair of Mocs.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
- UT honored its four seniors between games. Among those recognized were Kelsey Humphrey, Savannah Jerkins, Bre Setree and Jennie Sittloh.
- The Spartans needed to take 2-of-3 in the series to earn the 2017 Sunshine State Conference regular season chapionship.
- UT has now posted a winning record in six of the past seven seasons.

This concludes the 2017 season for the University of Tampa. The Spartans finish second in SSC play after being selected to place fifth in the preseason coaches poll.
