Slugging Spartans Hit Florida Tech for Series Sweep
MELBOURNE, Fla. – The University of Tampa softball team notched a doubleheader sweep over Florida Tech on Saturday.
INSIDE THE MATCHUP:
Game One Final: Tampa 9, Florida Tech 2
Game Two Final: Tampa 6, Florida Tech 1
Records: University of Tampa Spartans (4-3, 4-2 SSC), Florida Tech Panthers (4-3, 3-3 SSC)
Location: Nancy Bottge Field | Melbourne, Fla.
All-time Series: Tampa now holds a 69-51 lead in the all-time series between Sunshine State Conference foes. The Spartans are now winners of five straight against the Panthers.
HOW IT HAPPENED — GAME ONE:
- The Panthers crossed the first run of the day on a steal of home plate. Bottom 1 | 1-0 Florida Tech
- Lauren Fantone plated two Spartans on a single, scoring Mariah Galhouse and Cristina Clauberg. Top 3 | 2-1 Tampa
- A two-run home run by Stephanie Balmer started a 7-run inning for the Spartans. Corynn Miner added a two-run triple as Fantone had an RBI single. Lexie Chevalier launched a two-run home run to continue the outburst. Top 4 | 9-1 Tampa
- The only offense the Panthers could muster was a run in the fifth. Bottom 5 | 9-2 Tampa
INSIDE THE STATS — GAME ONE:
- The Spartans finished the game with 12 hits.
- Galhouse received the victory to move to 2-1 on the year. She tossed 7.0 innings, allowing just one earned run while striking out six Panthers.
- Five Spartans had two hits in the game, including Balmer, Miner, Fantone, Chevalier and Bailey Phillips.
- Fantone drove in three runs as Balmer, Miner and Chevalier each plated two.
HOW IT HAPPENED — GAME TWO:
- Florida Tech got on the board first, scoring on a solo home run. Bottom 2 | 1-0 Florida Tech.
- Galhouse smacked a three-run home run, also scoring Clauberg and Balmer. Top 3 | 3-1 Tampa
- The Spartans extended their lead on an RBI double off Alexa Russo's bat. Abigail Siegel would later score the team's second run of the inning. Top 6 | 5-1 Tampa
- Miner had a solo shot to finish the UT scoring. Top 7 | 6-1 Tampa
INSIDE THE STATS — GAME TWO:
- Clauberg and Miner each had a pair of hits to pace the Spartan offense.
- Galhouse drove in three of the six Spartan runs.
- Miner started in the circle and moves to 2-2 after 7.0 innings of work. She allowed just one run while striking out eight.
BEYOND THE BOX:
- The Spartans connected on four home runs in the two games.
- Head coach Leslie Kanter's squad turned in eight extra-base hits on the day.
- The 15 total runs is the most in an SC doubleheader for Tampa since scoring 17 at Rollins on February 18, 2017.
UP NEXT: Tampa now receives a break before heading to Miami Shores, Fla., to face Barry University on Friday, April 9, in a 2:30 p.m., doubleheader with the Bucs.
