Elena de Alfredo Named Second-Team All-Region
Senior was the lone Spartan named all-region.
JACKSON, Tenn. - University of Tampa senior guard Elena de Alfredo was among the honorees as the Division II Conference Commissioners Association (D2CCA) 2017 Women's Basketball South All-Region, first and second teams, and South Region Player of the Year have been announced.
Eckerd College's Victoria Vine has been voted as the D2CCA Women's Basketball South Region Player of the Year. These awards are sponsored by the D2CCA and are voted on by the sports information directors of the three conferences (GSC, SIAC, SSC) that make up the south region.
de Alfredo, a senior from Madrid, Spain, led the Spartans with 14.9 points per game as a senior. In 28 games, she also shot 46.9 percent from 3-point range. She departs as the program's all-time leader with a .458 career 3-point percentage. Her .861 free throw percentage is also the top mark in UT history. In two years at Tampa, she scored 791 points while registyering 170 assists and 50 steals.
Four players join Vine on the D2CCA Women's Basketball South All-Region Team including Destiny Betts of Benedict College, Alex Coyne of the University of West Florida, Madi Mitchell of Valdosta State University and Toni Brewer of West Florida.
Second team all-region players included Ivy Wallen of the University of North Alabama, Elena de Alfredo of the University of Tampa, Kacie Juday of Eckerd, Chelsy Springs of Saint Leo University and Kenya Samone' Dixon of Valdosta State.
Vine led Eckerd College to a 27-5 record, a sweep of the Sunshine States Conference regular season and tournament titles, and a No. 1 seed in the region tournament. Vine averaged 13.3 points per game and 4.3 rebounds per game. She surpassed the 1,000 career point mark this season, leading Eckerd to their first ever SSC Championship and broke the school record for wins. She scored 21 points in her team's first round win in the region tournament, their first ever region victory.
Betts led Benedict to a SIAC Championship and another appearance in the South Region Tournament, going 1-1 in region tourney play. She was the SIAC Player of the Year, averaging 14.6 points and 12.8 rebounds per game. Coyne led West Florida to the GSC Regular Season Title and a No. 2 seed in the South Region Tournament, advancing to the region title game. Coyne averaged 10.5 points and 6.7 assists per game. Mitchell led Valdosta State to a GSC Tournament Title, their first since winning in 1983 and 1984. Mitchell averaged 16.7 points and 8.3 rebounds per game. Brewer averaged 13.9 points and 11.4 rebounds per game, helping West Florida to their championship season.
Each of the first team selections will be nominated for D2CCA All-America honors.
