Kiira Riihijarvi Finishes in Top-10 at NCAA Championships
Freshman concludes record-season for UT golf program.
FINDLAY, Ohio - University of Tampa freshman wom en's golfer Kiira Riihijarvi followed up her NCAA South Super Regional championship with a ninth-place finish at the 2017 NCAA Division II National Championships.
The first golfer in program history to advance to the NCAA tournament, Riihijarvi was part of a four-round championship effort, consisting of five days after a beginning practice round. The championships were played at Findlay Country Club in Findlay, Ohio.
Riihijarvi, accompanied by head coach Missey Jones, shot a 77 in each of the first two rounds on Wednesday and Thursday, After carding a 78 on Friday, Riihijarvi closed the tournament with her best round of 75. She finished ninth overall with a total score of 307.
The top individual of the tournament came from the Sunshine State Conference as Saint Leo's Marie Coors finished with a 295. Fellow SSC opponent Barry University won the team championship as the Buccaneers earned the 2017 crown with a total score of 1,222.
Riihijarvi concludes a 2016-17 season where she posted four top-10 finishes. Among her feats were the NCAA South Super Regional Championship and ninth-place effort against the top competition in the nation at the championships. She was also sixth at the Flagler Fall Slam and seventh at the Florida Tech Lady Panther Invitational.
