Tampa Rowing Set for SSC Championships
Spartans to compete on Friday against conference foes.
MELBOURNE, Fla. - The 2017 Sunshine State Conference Rowing Championship is set for Friday at Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota. Nova Southeastern University will serve as the host institution.
Barry rowing won back-to-back national championships in 2014-2015 and 2015-2016. The SSC currently has three national championships in rowing as Nova Southeastern captured the national title in 2013, where Barry was the national runner-up. Nova Southeastern was runner up in 2014 and Barry in 2006.
There will be three nationally ranked teams competing for the conference championship in 2017. Florida Tech, who is currently ranked No. 2 in the nation, looks to capture their sixth SSC title, first since 2005. Barry will enter conference championship at No. 5 while Nova Southeastern is sitting at No. 8 as of the April 12th poll release by the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association.
Rollins and Tampa will also be competing in the 2017 SSC Rowing Championships.
This year marks the fifth consecutive SSC Rowing championship at Nathan Benderson Park. The venue was home to the 2014 World Cup Final and 2015 World Cup Final of the Modern Pentathlon. Prior to Nathan Benderson Park, the SSC championship was held at Canal 54 in Fellsmere (2008-2011).
The championship will begin with an Exhibition 4 race at 8:45 a.m. The Varsity 4 boats will take the water for their race at 9 a.m., and the Varsity 8 race will begin at 9:15 a.m.
There will be an awards ceremony following at 10 a.m. to recognize the All-SSC Team, the Varsity 4 and Varsity 8 winners and the 2017 SSC Champions.
