Women’s 800 Free Relay Takes NCAA National Championship
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The University of Tampa women's swimming team won a national title in the 800 Free Relay as both Spartan teams continue to earn points through the first three days at the 2013 NCAA Division II Swimming and Diving Championships.
Tampa's 800 Free Relay team earned a national championship with a time of 7:24.70 in the women's event. The team of Kristine Kassl, Alexandria Greenhill, Alex Hipolito and Heather Glenday made Spartan history and claimed the first UT national title since 2009. It was just the third women's relay title in school history as the others came in 1987 and 1988.
Heading to the final day of competition, the Spartan women are 14th while the men are 13th with 108 and 91 points respectively. Drury continues to lead on both sides.
Glenday also placed fifth in the 500 Free with a time of 4:53.40 as she has now earned All-American status in three events. Catherine Parker was sixth in the 200 Fly consolation at 2:04.43.
Karl Burdis placed fourth in the 100 Back (48.10), becoming the first UT male to earn All-American status. Norbert Kovacs joined him with a fifth-place showing in the 200 Fly (1:48.29) as Zane Hranac was eighth in the 200 Fly consolation (1:51.95).
The Tampa men's 800 Free Relay team was 14th with a time of 6:53.80 from Derek Krell, Burdis, David Humphrey and Kovacs.
Saturday's prelims will start at 10 a.m., with the finals slated for 5:30 p.m. The events will include the 1,650 Free, 100 Free, 200 Back, 200 Breast and 400 Free Relay.
