#4 Spartans Take Down Panthers in SSC Matchup

Tampa, Fla. – Fourth ranked University of Tampa baseball team took the series over Sunshine State Conference opponent Florida Tech on a chilly Saturday afternoon doubleheader.   

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:

Game One Final: No. 4 Tampa Spartans 5, Florida Tech 2

Game Two Final: Florida Tech 3, No. 4 Tampa 2

Records: Tampa (11-5, 4-2 SSC), Florida Tech (5-12, 2-4 SSC)

Location: UT Baseball Field | Tampa, Fla.

All-time Series: Tampa still leads in the all-time series between the two ball clubs with the record sitting at 119-35.

HOW IT HAPPENED / GAME ONE: 

• The Spartans looked to jump out in front early as second baseman Drew Ehrhard and left fielder Nick Derr put together back-to-back singles and would eventually come around to score. || Bot. 1|| 2-0 UT
• First baseman Dan Sullivan put the Spartans up 3-1 with a leadoff homerun to right field, giving him his second homerun on the year. || Bot. 4 || 3-1 UT
• Hitting his fifth homerun of the year, and the second Tampa homerun of the game, Jose Cadenas drilled a shot to right field. || Bot. 5 || 4-2 UT

HOW IT HAPPENED / GAME TWO: 

• Both team's pitching staffs were dueling as the game remained scoreless through the first six innings. However, the Panthers were able to crack open the scoring by putting two runs up in the top of the seventh.
• However, the Spartans were able to put together a rally as Christian Flint singled up the middle, followed by a Cadenas walk. With bases loaded, Nick Derr singled up the middle, driving in two runs, tying the game at 2-2. || Bot. 8 || 2-2 Tied

INSIDE THE STATS / GAME ONE:

• Mike Navarette finished the game 2-for-4 with an RBI.
• Sullivan went 1-for-3 with a HR and two RBI.
• Cadenas also went 1-for-3 with a HR and an RBI.
• Jacinto Arredondo registered his fourth save of the season.

OUTSIDE THE BOX:

GAME ONE

• Tampa's pitching staff continues to dominate as they combined for ten strikeouts in the first game, giving them their tenth game in which the pitching staff combined for 10 or more strikeouts.

UP NEXT:

The Spartans will return to action Monday afternoon as they are set to take on Seton Hill. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
