CHAMPS: Tampa Men's Swimming Wins SSC Title; Spartan Women Second
CLEARWATER, Fla. - The University of Tampa men's swimming team captured the 2020 Sunshine State Conference Swimming Championship, winning the program's first-ever SSC crown. The Spartan women raced to a second-place finish.

MEN'S TOP PERFORMERS:
- Senior Brett Saunders earned the 2020 SSC Swimmer of the Meet award, having scored 76 of the Spartans' total points.
- Jared Fitzgerald finished first in the Men's 100 Yard Freestyle with a time of 43.93. Yannick Smith took third with a time of 44.46.
- Saunders set a new SSC Championships meet record and a new school record in the Men's 200 Yard Backstroke with a time of 1:43.51.
- The SSC champs put a final stamp on their prize with a first-place finish by the Men's 400 Yard Freestyle A Relay of Mikael Haugen, Smith, Aaron James and Fitzgerald with a time of 2:57.03
WOMEN'S TOP PERFORMERS:
- Sophomore Courtney Sherwood earned the 2020 Swimmer of the Meet, tallying 77 points.
- Jessie Tobin took silver in the Women's 1,650 Yard Freestyle with a time of 17:01.19 Alexa Turco took sixth place with a time of 17:23.46.
- Hana van Loock was first in the Women's 100 Yard Freestyle with a time of 50.12. Elizaveta Bazarova finished second with a time of 50.71.
- Sherwood took the silver in the Women's 200 Yard Backstroke with a time of 1:59.69. Erin Hixenbaugh was fourth with a time of 2:01.68.
- Julia Augustsson set a new school record and took first place in the Women's 200 Yard Breaststroke with a time of 2:14.55. Anja Oca placed third with a time of 2:18.40.
- Tampa concluded the championships with a first-place finish by the Women's 400 Yard Freestyle A Relay of Maureen Moore, Molly O'Hara, Bazarova and van Loock with a time of 3:23.75.
UP NEXT:
The Spartans now shift their focus to the 2020 NCAA Division II Swimming & Diving Championships. The finals are scheduled for March 11-14 at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio.
