COLUMBUS, Ga. - The number-four ranked University of Tampa Women's Soccer team defeated #22 Belmont Abbey 1-0 in the Columbus State Invitational. The Spartans improve to 3-0 on the season while Belmont Abbey falls to 2-1.
Tampa battled with the Cougars throughout the opening 45 minutes, as neither team could register a goal in the first half.
The Spartans broke the scoreless tie early in the second period when Alison Penland registered her first goal of season, assisted by Shelby Kuni, to give Tampa the 1-0 lead. The Cougars had no answer for the Spartans' spectacular defense as they were allowed only two shots, which both came in the first half, while facing 17 shots from the potent Tampa attack.
Shannon Aitken continued her strong play in net for the Spartans this season, posting her second shutout in the opening three matches to lead Tampa to victory.
The Spartans close out the Cougar Classic tomorrow against the number-eight ranked Tusculum College at 11 a.m.
