COLUMBUS, Ga. - The 14th-ranked University of Tampa women's soccer team (18-2-2) advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Women's Soccer Championship with a 2-0 win over Montevallo (15-8) on Friday afternoon.
Shelby Kuni made history with her 14th minute goal off a cross from Courtney Evans to give Tampa a 1-0 lead. The goal marks her 13th of the season and the 52nd of her career, making her Tampa's all-time leader in goals. Ashley Flateland added to the Spartan lead in the 26th minute with her fifth of the season off a corner kick by Evans, extending the Spartan lead to 2-0.
Senior goalkeeper Shannon Aitken recorded her 13th shutout of the season, stopping all five shots that found their way through to her. With her two assists in the match, Evans now stands at 14 for the season. The Spartans were able to quell the Montevallo attack, and record the victory despite being outshot 13-10 in the match.
Tampa advances to the NCAA quarterfinal to square off against the winner of Friday's match between Tusculum and Columbus State. That match will be played on Sunday in Columbus, Ga.
