Tampa’s Four-Game Win Streak Snapped at No. 11 Rollins
WINTER PARK, Fla. - The University of Tampa (4-3, 01 SSC) women's soccer team saw its four-match win streak end at the hands of No. 11 Rollins College (6-0-1, 1-0) in the Sunshine State Conference opener for both teams. UT fell by a final score of 2-0.
"It was a tough loss tonight against one of our conference foes," says head coach Gerry Lucey. "We started strong and felt we were the better team for 30 minutes. Our possession and movement was good although we didn't really threaten Rollins in their defensive end."
The Tars scored a goal in both halves, with the first coming from Ashley Waplinger in the 35th minute. Rollins would later add its second goal of the evening at the 65:38 mark.
"We had opportunities to get shots off but were gun shy," says Lucey. "Our crossing was also inaccurate which led to frustration. Rollins though played a strong physical game and were very organized and disciplined. They waited for their chances and we were nice enough to help them."
Freshman Emelie Karstrom started in goal for Tampa, finishing with four saves. The Tars held a 10-6 shot differential, with a 6-1 advantage in shots on goal.
"Terrible efforts at defending led to them getting a cross off deep on our left side and we left their forward unmarked," comments Lucey. "She finished very well. The second half was much of the same although Rollins did come into the game more as we pressed for an equalizer. We changed a few things up being down 2-0 but were unable to get that first goal which would've unsettled Rollins."
Jazmin Perry led Tampa with a pair of shots as the lone shot on goal came from freshman Gabby Russo.
"Without taking anything away from Rollins we are disappointed with our own performance at times and lack of urgency in defense," continues Lucey. "I've told the girls umpteen times that these mistakes decide games and once again it's proven correct. We've had 3 games in 6 days which takes its toll while Rollins have had the luxury of being off for a week. They are a good side and hopefully we will get to see them again later in the season."
