Tampa Plays to Draw at No. 19 Florida Tech
MELBOURNE, Fla. - Playing in its second double overtime match in the previous three games, the University of Tampa (6-4-2, 0-2-1) women's soccer team recorded a 0-0 tie at No. 19 Florida Tech (8-2-1, 2-2-1). The match was a make-up from a game previously scheduled for last Sunday.
"The defense played very well today against a very strong Tech team," says head coach Gerry Lucey. "All four along the backline were very solid and worked in harmony with each other. It wasn't the prettiest soccer we have played on a difficult surface in Melbourne. Florida Tech are always very disciplined and well organized. The proved that again. We did manage to score with two minutes left in double overtime but were very harshly ruled offside. I think a tie was probably a fair result in the end."
Each team launched three shots in the first half, with the Spartans recording a pair on goal. The Panthers finished with eight shots, including one on goal as UT notched three and two respectively.
Carolyn Simon and Dana Palmiotto each tallied a shot on goal as Jazmin Perry accounted for the other shot.
Freshman goalkeeper Emelie Karstrom registered her third shutout of the season, finishing with a save.
"We now look forward to a couple of home games this weekend against a very tough Florida Southern team and Barry," comments Lucey. "This in my opinion is the toughest conference in the country. We need to come out and get two wins and put us back in contention for conference playoffs and hopefully an NCAA bid at the end of the season. There's a lot of soccer to be played and the team are ready for the challenge."
The Spartans return home where it will host Sunshine State Conference opponent Florida Southern on Friday at 7 p.m. The game will follow the UT men's soccer game, which is slated for 4:30 p.m. Live stats and a webcast will be available through www.tampaspartans.com.
