Brittany Bayes Named to 2015 All-SSC Women’s Swimming Team
MELBOURNE, Fla. - The Sunshine State Conference has announced the 2015 All-SSC Women's Swimming Team. Lynn's Rebecca Matthews was named SSC Swimmer of the Year. Nova Southeastern's Bryndis Hansen was named SSC Freshman of the Year and Hollie Bonewit-Cron of NSU earns SSC Coach of the Year.
Voting for the SSC Swimmer, Freshman, and Coach of the Year awards was conducted among the league's swimming coaches. Individual points accumulated at the 2015 SSC Swimming Championships, which took place on Feb. 19-22 at the Orlando YMCA Aquatic Center, determined the All-SSC Women's Swimming Team. The top eight swimmers, based on points, were named All-SSC First Team, and the next eight swimmers were named All-SSC Second Team.
Brittany Bayes represented UT on the first team. The freshman from Mullica Hill, N.J., was the SSC champion in the 1,000 Free and 1,650 Free. She was also the runner-up in the 500 Free. She then advanced to the NCAA Championships, where she became an All-American in the 800 Free Relay.
Matthews was named the 2015 SSC Championship Swimmer of the Meet following three SSC meet and conference records. At nationals, Matthews won the 100 & 200 Breaststroke national championships. the 100 Breaststroke was the first individual swimming national title for the program. Her 200 Breaststroke time of 2:10.77 is a NCAA D-II record.
Hansen was part of five SSC Meet record breaking performances and four SSC record breaking performances during the 2015 SSC Championship Meet. Her performance helped Nova Southeastern capture this year's women's title. Hansen earned a NCAA D-II individual championship in the 50 Free. Her time of 22.53 was a NCAA D-II record.
Bonewit-Cron led the Sharks to their second Sunshine State Conference women's championship in February. NSU won two individual women's national titles at the 2015 National Championship Meet. Nova Southeastern finished fourth out of 39 teams that earned points at the national championship.
Alli Crenshaw (Florida Southern), Emma Lawrenz (Nova Southeastern) repeat as first team members from last year. Crenshaw also earned first team accolades in 2013.
