Tampa to Host a Pair of Weekend Meets
The men's and women's swim programs will host a pair of tough opponents in Indian River State College and Saint Leo University to close out the home schedule.
TAMPA, Fla. – The University of Tampa men's and women's swim teams will host a pair of weekend meets to close out the home slate for the 2015-16 season. The Spartans will welcome Indian River State College on Friday, Jan. 8 for a 2 p.m. meet before hosting the Tampa Relays on Saturday, Jan. 9th at 11 a.m.
The men's team jumped to No. 3 in the nation after an impressive three days hosting the Spartan Invitational. Senior Jeremy Parker led the charge, earning CollegeSwimming National Swimmer of the Week honors behind a pair of UT records.
Fellow senior Martin Hammer swam a national qualifying time in the 50 free, touching the wall in just 19.88 seconds in the first day of the invite. Tampa fell to Indian River State in the second meet of the 2013-14 season.
The No. 11 women's squad finished the Spartan invite in first place. Junior Marisa Barton notched "B" cut times of 23.45 and 51.95 in the women's 50 freestyle and the 100 freestyle.
Sophomore Brittany Bayes led UT in distance free, finishing with "B" cuts in the 200, 500 and 1650 freestyle events. Sophomore Sophie Long added her own "B" cut effort in the 100 fly, finishing with a time of 56.66 seconds. Long mirrored in the 200 individual medley with a 2:06.59 time.
The Spartan women last hosted Indian River State in the 2013-14 season, falling 186-76 early on the campaign.
The IRSC men posted a close win over Florida State on Dec. 15 but the women fell to Florida International in the same contest.
The Spartans will host the annual Tampa Relays on Saturday, which features competition against Saint Leo University. The contest will mark senior day, honoring the contributions of its senior class with a pre-meet ceremony.
