Singles Play Pushes Tampa Past Saginaw Valley State
ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. - The No. 40 University of Tampa (3-7) tennis team took four singles matches to earn a 5-4 victory over Saginaw Valley State University (5-11) in a neutral site meeting on Tuesday at Sanlando Park.
SVSU took two of the three doubles contests as UT's win came from the number-two team of Megan Mancini and Maddie Caropino. The pair won by a score of 8-5.
Kathleen Beckham, Briana Ryan, Victoria Simon and Becky Ewing each won their singles matches for head coach Al DuFaux's squad, coming in the three through six matches respectively.
Ryan needed three sets as she clinched the deciding match for Tampa, giving her team the overall victory. After defeating SVSU's Charlotte Wong by a score of 7-6 with a 7-3 tie break score in the first set, Ryan was forced to play a third and deciding set after falling 6-2 in the second set. The junior responded with a 6-2 triumph in the third set for the Spartans.
Tampa is now off until Saturday, March 19, when it hosts Bentley University in a 10 a.m. meeting at the UT Tennis Complex.
