Season Opener a Success for No. 26 Tampa
TAMPA, Fla. - The No. 26 University of Tampa (1-0) women's tennis team defeated St. Petersburg College (0-1) in its 2013 season opener by a score of 8-1. SPC is ranked No.8 nationally in the NJCAA ranks.
UT took five of the six matches in singles as number one Thashia Garcia defeated Shaunte Southern 6-4, 6-0. Lauren Hewett, Lindsay Nochowicz, Kelsey Matthews, and Jenelle Morgan also won their respected matches in straight sets. Meg Wladimirski lost in a third set tie-break by a score of 12-10.
In doubles action, the Spartans swept all three matches. No. 10 regionally ranked Hewett and Wladimirski swept their opponents 8-0, while Nochowicz/Matthews and Garcia/Periera won their respected matches.
Tampa will be back in action on Tuesday in its home opener against Ave Maria at 3 p.m., at the UT Tennis Complex.
