Spartans Sting Yellow Jackets with 9-0 Sweep
TAMPA, Fla. - The No. 14 University of Tampa (14-3) tennis team earned a 9-0 victory over No. 47 West Virginia State University (15-6) on Friday.
The Spartans won all three doubles matches on the day as No. 10 regionally ranked doubles duo Lindsay Nochowicz and Kelsey Matthews crushed their opponents 8-1. No. 25 nationally ranked Lauren Hewett and Meg Wladimirski had to fight back from an early 4-0 deficit to win by a final of 8-6.
The final doubles match came down to the end as Thashia Garcia and Chloe Pereira fought back to win 8-5.
Recently ranked at No. 40 nationally, Garcia went out and led the Spartans from the number one singles spot as she defeated her opponent 6-1, 6-1.
Wladimirski endured the longest match of the day at the number two singles spot, but came out on top with at 6-2, 6-5 victory. Hewett, Nochowicz, Matthews, and Morgan won their matches respectively.
Friday's win marks the first time in program history that the Spartans have gone undefeated for an entire month.
Tampa returns to Sunshine State Conference action on Wednesday as they travel to Florida Southern College for a 3 p.m. match.
