Erica Woodard and Devin Shaw Earn NCAA Degree Completion Awards
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The NCAA Division II Degree Completion Award Committee has selected recipients for the 2008-09 awards, naming University of Tampa student-athletes Erica Woodard and Devin Shaw among the recipients.
From a pool of 182 applications, the committee awarded 86 applicants from 63 different Division II institutions. The committee also selected 10 alternates.
The Division II Degree-Completion Award program provides financial assistance to deserving student-athletes with completion of a first baccalaureate degree.
Candidates are student-athletes who have exhausted their athletics eligibility and have received athletics financial aid. Recipients are selected on the basis of several factors, with emphasis on academic performance. Other factors considered are financial circumstances, athletics achievement, and involvement in campus and community activities.
Woodard, a four-year member of the women's basketball team, will complete her degree in nursing. The Valrico native played in 109 career games for UT, starting 90 as she helped the Spartans to a four year record of 89-32. She also completed her playing career with 870 points and 799 rebounds.
Shaw, a catalyst for the men's soccer team, is a four-year letterwinner who helped UT back to the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2001. The Spring Hill native will complete his degree in nursing after starting 58 of 65 games as a Spartan. He concluded his career with seven goals, eight assists, four game-winning goals and 63 shots.
